How Much Does it Cost to Submit Form I-485

Updated 4/10/2017

Filing Form I-485 costs $1,140. The biometrics services fee required for all applicants between the ages of 14 and 78 costs an additional $85.

There is a reduced fee for children who are 13 or younger when filing with at least one parent. The fee is $750 in this situation.

If you are applying as a refugee under section 209(a) of the INA, there is no fee to file Form I-485.

No matter the amount of your fee, you must pay by check or money order and follow the following criteria:

  • The money must come from a bank or other financial institution in the United States and be payable in U.S. currency; and
  • The check or money order must be made payable to: U.S. Department of Homeland Security. You may not abbreviate the name.

If you pay by check, you will not receive the original check back. USCIS will keep a copy of the check on file and destroy the original copy after converting your payment into an electronic funds transfer (EFT). An EFT means that your account information from the check will be used to debit the money from your account, usually within 24 hours.

The I-485 Form is included in the SimpleCitizen Adjustment of Status Application Packet.

The government fees are the last thing that you will pay when you are doing an Adjustment of Status using the Form I-485. Just attached the check or money order. Here it is explained in plain English with pictures.

If I am submitting a few different USCIS forms such as the Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization and/or Form I-131, Application for Travel Document, Form I-485, Form I-864, and Form I-130 do I need to submit a few different checks all paper-clipped to the front of the application or should I add them all into one big check?

@glenn_l_angelo I think this article is a good start but I would prefer a video or some type of graphic that shows me what to do.

What do you think? @Admin

I attached a check for $985 with my I-485 last week. Fingers crossed it gets approved!!

@robertogarc361 I submitted my application last week too. I submitted everything together and used a pretty good immigration attorney. The I-485 fee is $985, but you also have to pay the biometrics fee and the I-130 fee and the immigration legal fees. In grand total, the entire process ran me about $4,000
